SONG

Come, Thou Long-Expected Jesus

Come, Thou long-expected Jesus,
Born to set Thy people free;
From our fears and sins release us,
Let us find our rest in Thee.
Israel’s Strength and Consolation,
Hope of all the earth Thou art;
Dear Desire of every nation,
Joy of every longing heart.

Born Thy people to deliver,
Born a child and yet a King,
Born to reign in us forever,
Now Thy gracious kingdom bring.
By Thine own eternal Spirit
Rule in all our hearts alone;
By Thine all sufficient merit,
Raise us to Thy glorious throne.

ACTIVITY

Family lines were very important to the Israelites, which is why Matthew laid out the direct line from Abraham all the way to Jesus, including Judah (Lion of Judah), Jesse (Root/Shoot of Jesse) and David (Son of David) in the middle.

Today’s activity has 2 options.

Option #1 merely involves breaking down and simplifying in a visual format the verses we just read. On a piece of paper or a poster board, make Jesus’ family line, and draw pictures next to ones who are spoken of in the Bible to remind you of who they are (for example, a crown next to David and a crown and lots of jewels or money next to Solomon).

Option #2 is to draw your Family Tree as large or as small as your children want. Ask other family members for information if there are family members you don’t know or can’t remember names. If there are family members who accomplished extraordinary things, you could write their achievements next to their names. Consider framing and hanging it on the wall. Discovering their family tree and putting it in a visual format can be exciting to kids, and can connect them to the past in a meaningful way.
